Success of the Armenian Cosmic Ray Science during 26th Cosmic Ray Conference in Russia. CRD delegation steers a great interest

The Armenian participants in the 26th Cosmic Ray Conference, Dubna, Russia (July 3-7, 2000) returned home. Members of Armenian delegation, consisting of seven physicists from the Cosmic Ray Division of Yerevan Physics Institute (CRD) devoted their presentation to the discussion of physical aspects of sources and acceleration mechanism of high energy Cosmic Rays, and on the issues of space weather forecasting. All of the CRD presentations caused great interest, and stirred the scientific community at the conference. CRD's focus on advanced data access features, and online connectivity got special attention. The conference specifically praised the leading position of CRD in the field of data acquisition and online data access. Advanced features of the CRD installations, timeliness of our research projects, and the focus of our major projects on space weather research position us on the very edge of modern cosmic ray science. Today cosmic ray research has acquired features that make it an applied science dealing with the issues of immediate benefit to space-borne technologies, at the same time, maintaining the traditional aspect of pure science with the quest for knowledge of universe, and its origins. Some of our projects--such as the Aragats Solar Environment Center Project--focus on issues of immediate concern for the high-technology business community (security of satellite communications, timely warnings about severe solar storms that can cause damage even to ground power grids, and other operations). Some other projects have more fundamental concerns.
